Updated Elena Camp in Rwenzori Mountains

Adventure enthusiasts and nature lovers have a thrilling reason to visit the Rwenzori Mountains National Park in Uganda. The Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) has unveiled the new Elena Camp, an accommodation facility designed to enhance the trekking experience for visitors exploring the fabled “Mountains of the Moon.”

A Gateway to Margherita Peak

Perched at an altitude of 4,500 meters above sea level, Elena Camp offers a unique base for climbers preparing to conquer Margherita Peak, the highest point in Uganda at 5,109 meters. With temperatures dropping to 2°C or lower, this camp is not only a refuge from the extreme cold but also a stepping stone for adventurers tackling the final ascent.

Accommodation and Facilities

At 4,500 meters above sea level, the updated Elena Camp in the Rwenzori Mountains offers a unique base for climbers preparing to conquer Margherita Peak, the highest point in Uganda at 5,109 meters. This camp is not only a refuge from the extreme cold but also a stepping stone for adventurers tackling the final ascent.

Elena Camp is thoughtfully designed to provide comfort and functionality in the rugged wilderness of the Rwenzoris. It replaces the old facility that was a simple single had with basic facilities. The facility can host 34 tourists and 36 support staff, including guides and porters, each night. The camp is accessible to climbers on the Central Circuit and the Bukurungu Route to Margherita peak. Key features include:

  • Dining and Kitchen Facilities: A dedicated dining room and kitchen ensure visitors can refuel and relax after a long day of trekking.
  • Fully Furnished Rooms: The accommodations come equipped with beds and mattresses for a restful night.
  • Essential Amenities: Reliable water supply, power, and storage facilities make the stay comfortable and efficient.

New Boardwalks for a Smooth Trek

One of the most exciting updates to the Rwenzori trekking experience is the installation of over 12 kilometers of boardwalks along the central circuit. These boardwalks make navigating the notoriously challenging bogs much easier and more comfortable, significantly improving the journey for trekkers.

Enhanced Safety and Preparedness

The UWA has also prioritized safety by equipping the camp and surrounding areas with advanced mountaineering gear, including:

  • Static and dynamic ropes
  • Crampons and ice axes
  • Modern rescue stretchers and oxygen bags
  • Carabiners, ascenders, and other essential climbing equipment

These measures ensure that climbers and guides are well-prepared for the demanding conditions of the Rwenzoris, making the adventure safer and more accessible.
