Is it safe to travel to Uganda? Uganda is generally considered safe for travelers. However, it is essential to take standard precautions, such as avoiding isolated areas at night and being aware of your surroundings. During your safari, our tour guide will be with you to address any concerns, and our tour manager is available on call at all times.
What vaccinations are required before traveling to Uganda? Yellow fever vaccination is mandatory for entry into Uganda. If you cannot receive the vaccination, ensure you have a medical exemption certificate. This certificate is part of the tourist visa application process. We also recommend malaria prophylaxis, though it is not mandatory. Consult your healthcare provider for specific recommendations.
Do I need a visa to travel to Uganda? Yes, most travelers need a valid visa and passport to visit Uganda. Your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond the anticipated end date of your safari. For further information on visa requirements and applications, visit Uganda Visa Application. A tourist visa costs US$50 and is valid for 90 days. Online entry visa applications are done at: https://visas.immigration.go.ug
What is the best time to visit Uganda? Uganda's climate is generally favorable year-round, but the dry seasons from June to August and December to February are ideal for wildlife viewing and gorilla and chimpanzee trekking. During these months, animals congregate around water sources, making them easier to spot, and drier conditions make trekking more manageable.
What should I pack for a trip to Uganda? Pack lightweight clothing, sturdy shoes, sun protection (hat, sunglasses, sunscreen), insect repellent, a first aid kit, travel documents (passport, visas, vaccination certificates), and necessary medications. Binoculars and a good camera or phone are also useful for safaris. Avoid brightly colored clothing if you plan on wildlife viewing or trekking.
What are the accommodation options in Uganda? We offer a range of accommodations depending on the safari location, including boutique hotels, lodges, tented camps, and eco-lodges. Our goal is to capture the local character of a place while providing comfort and safety.
Will my room have a private bathroom? Yes, all accommodations include private ensuite bathrooms. Exceptions are made for mountain treks and walking safaris, where shared facilities may be used to maintain a small environmental footprint.
How can I stay connected in Uganda? Wi-Fi is available at most hotels and safari lodges, often free of charge. However, it may not be available in remote locations such as walking safaris or mountain treks. Many travelers use local SIM cards or portable Wi-Fi devices. Major cities and tourist areas typically have good mobile coverage, but remote areas may have limited connectivity. Inform our guide from Nandi Adventures and they will help you get this done.
Is it safe to drink tap water in Uganda? In many parts of Uganda, tap water is not safe to drink. Stick to bottled or purified water. We provide free bottled water in all our safari vehicles, and all bottles are collected for recycling.
I have food allergies or dietary requirements. Will that be a problem? Please inform us of any food allergies or dietary requirements, such as vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, or kosher diets. Include this information on your registration form, and we will accommodate your needs.
What kind of wildlife can I expect to see on safari? Uganda is home to diverse wildlife, including the Big Five (lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard, and rhinoceros), mountain gorillas, chimpanzees, golden monkeys, giraffes, zebras, hippos, and over 1,070 bird species. Wildlife sightings depend on the region and season.
Do I have to join every activity? Participation in activities is optional. Feel free to relax, explore the community, or engage in other activities if you prefer. However, Nandi Adventures cannot reimburse you for included activities you choose to skip.
Do you have a luggage limit? We recommend one duffel bag or soft suitcase per person, plus a small carry-on. Domestic flights have a luggage limit of 15kg (33lbs) per person. If you need to carry more, let us know in advance to make arrangements. Extra luggage may incur additional fees.
How can I ensure a respectful and culturally sensitive visit? Our local guides and safari coordinators will provide insights into local customs and traditions. Dress modestly, especially in rural areas and religious sites. Be polite and respectful, and always ask permission before taking photos of people.
What should I know about tipping in Uganda? Tipping is appreciated in the hospitality and tourism sectors. Tip guides, drivers, and service staff appropriately.
What language is spoken in Uganda? Uganda is linguistically diverse, with over 40 languages spoken. English and Swahili are the official languages. English is widely spoken, and learning a few basic Luganda phrases can be helpful.
Can I travel with a large family or group of friends? Can you create a safari just for us? Yes, we enjoy working with groups and can create a customized safari to fit your needs. Contact us with your interests, and we will tailor a safari for your group.
Can I bring my child on a safari? Yes, we welcome pre-teens and teenagers on our safaris. Nandi Adventures has a history of leading student safaris and missions. Review our itineraries to choose a safari suitable for your family.
What currency should I use, and are ATMs available? Uganda uses the Uganda Shilling. It is advisable to carry some local cash for tips and souvenirs. ATMs are available in cities but may be scarce in remote areas. Credit cards (Visa, MasterCard, and American Express) are accepted in larger establishments. US dollars are also widely used.
Do I need travel insurance for my trip to Uganda? While not required, travel insurance is highly recommended. It should cover trip cancellation, medical emergencies, flight delays, and medical evacuation. Ensure your policy covers planned activities, such as mountain climbing or whitewater rafting.
Why don't you offer international air travel with your safaris? Many guests prefer to arrange their international travel independently due to airline preferences or frequent flyer miles. We provide the start and end details of the safari, allowing you to book your travel accordingly. We can arrange flights from the Maasai Mara in Kenya to Bwindi or other destinations in Uganda.
I would like to add a few days to the end of the safari. Is this possible? Yes, you can extend your stay. Many guests choose to spend extra days in Kampala or other destinations. Please inform us of your plans, and we will assist with the necessary arrangements. We are happy to assist at no extra cost.
I'm ready to book a safari. What do I need to do? Complete the inquiry form and make a deposit of 40% per person. This deposit secures your chosen safari. For gorilla and chimpanzee trekking, permits will be confirmed upon payment. The remaining balance is due 60 days before the safari start date.
What type of payment do you accept? Payments must be made in US dollars via bank transfer or credit card. We accept Visa, MasterCard, and American Express. Credit card payments incur a processing fee of 3.5%.
What if I have to cancel a safari after I’ve made my deposit? Deposits are non-refundable, as they secure accommodations, park fees, and permits. For detailed information on refunds and cancellation fees, refer to our Terms and Conditions.
Is there a chance my safari will be cancelled after I have already signed up? While we strive to avoid cancellations, unforeseen circumstances can arise. If a safari is cancelled due to reasons beyond our control, such as a pandemic, you will be notified as soon as possible. In such cases, your payment will be refunded less the costs already incurred.
